Why are our chickens laying soft-shelled eggs? Do they lack minerals? We give them lots of kitchen scraps(ie. bits of vegetables, cracker crumbs.) They also get grit and oyster shell given to them. Any ideas?

hi Our pet chicken has started laying soft shelled eggs which break as soon as they are layed or mis-shapened ones with soft shells. She sometimes lays them in the garden on the path or in the run, but at times they are laid in her nest but still soft shelled. She has plenty of grit and the run of our fruit garden all day.Is there a reason for this?

Hallo
Can you say what breed your chicken is, and how old? Is it a modern hybrid? Our problem - very similar to yours - turned out (IT SEEMS!) to be due to the fact that modern breeds are designed (yes, designed) to be productive for just one year. Crazy but true. After the first moult, modern hybrids lose fertility and their eggs lose integrity.

Thank you Dr. Richard Meyer, it seems our chickens came from a farmer who said they were just ordinary common of garden ones, they were given to my husband who has poor health, for an interest for him, they were from the farmers layers sic. This doesn't seem to be the correct spelling.
It seems there is no reason to worry, I thought we were doing something wrong, they are very active and seem to enjoy life which is really all we strive for. Regards Jeanne Hardwick

On the brighter side, ours took a while but gradually got back to more or less normal allbeit considerably less production. It might take a few months but if they're just for ornamental value, nothing to worry about (except the eggs are horrible to pick up, aren't they?!). Good luck Richard meyer

The first pullet egg's may be soft-shelled until her system gets into its stride. If it continues, make sure that the birds are getting a balanced diet such as that provided by a commercial free-range or organic layer’s ration. Such feeds will usually contain calcium and phosphorus in the right ratio (around 3.5-4% calcium to 0.3% phosphorus). Providing a little crushed oyster-shell or calcified seaweed will ensure that any deficiency is rectified, for the birds will not take more than they require.

A shock can also make a hen lay a soft-shelled egg. My own observations are that if a flock is caught in a sudden shower of rain (for they are sometimes too dim to run for shelter), a few soft-shelled eggs are often produced the next day, but by the following day, they’re back to normal.

It is when soft-shelled eggs or misshapen ones are produced regularly that there need be a cause for concern. Veterinary advice should be sought. Conditions that adversely affect eggs include Newcastle disease (a notifiable disease to the authorities) and Infectious bronchitis, but there would be disease symptoms showing in the birds themselves if either of these was present. Hybrids are normally vaccinated against them.

Is it safe to eat soft shelled eggs? I am less likely to feel comfortable feeding them to the family due to the fact that I would imagine them to be more porous absorbing more like a sponge. Sometimes our regular hard shelled eggs are dirty with dried guinea hen dung on them. What is the proper way to clean these eggs before eating them? We have just been wiping them with warm water, no soap. Also, how long can an egg left out, non-refrigerated, go until it starts to spoil?
